Article by Kross: Bicycle Frame Selection - Select the Right Size

Kross (Poland) - Buying a new bike requires proper preparation. It's not just about choosing the right model. In order to really enjoy the ride, the key thing will be a properly selected bicycle frame.

Very often in the heat of searching for a new bike, we ask ourselves a lot of questions. What equipment will be perfect for us? How big of a jump in the suspension do we need? Is a carbon or aluminium frame better in our case? Among hundreds of questions, we completely forget that a poorly selected bicycle frame can deprive us of the pleasure of riding any bike, even the most expensive one. This issue applies to literally every type of two wheels. Choosing the right size bike frame is equally important for mountain, road, cross and even city bikes. In some types of bikes, such as the Enduro, there may be slightly different rules. However, it always involves maintaining the perfect balance between convenience and manoeuvrability.

Bicycle frame selection – right height:

Each bike model is available in different frame sizes, which at Kross, is labelled with letters. XS, S, M, L or XL – such a distinction is much more intuitive and understandable than the size used over the years expressed in inches of the length of the seatpost. What exactly does the size of the bicycle frame mean? In the case of the labels we use, it covers all the key dimensions. The bigger the bike frame, the higher and longer the bike is. Very often, the size of the frame also affects its appearance – in the smallest sizes we can notice that the upper pipe falls at a steeper angle than in slightly larger "square" sizes.

Methods for selecting the right frame size:

In fact, there are several commonly used standards for choosing a bicycle frame. There is a mathematical approach – measuring the length of our legs from the ground to the crotch, and then multiplying this by 0.57 in the case of a mountain bike – by 0.63 in the case of a trekking bike – by 0.66 in the case of a road bike. The result obtained should be divided by 2.54 to obtain the value in inches – this is how much a correctly selected bicycle frame should have.

How does the above advice translate into the practice of choosing a bicycle frame?

For Kross bikes, whether MTB, trekking, cross or road bikes we suggest the following indicator:

  • for height 140 – 165 cm choose size S
  • for height 165 – 178 size M
  • for height 178 – 190 size L
  • for height of more than 190 , choose XL, in the case of trekking and cross-country bicycles.

The second key aspect of choosing the right size of a bicycle frame is its length. Here, too you should feel comfortable when following the practical way – on the right size of frame, you should not be leaning on the steering wheel too much. Also, you cannot be too "squeezed". Of course, the position on the bicycle can be modified to a certain extent – if you are leaning too much over the bicycle frame, change the bridge to a shorter one, if you are sitting too straight – try a longer handlebar bracket.

If the two bordering sizes of the bicycle frame seem similar to, choose according to the principle – the smaller size will be more dynamic and manoeuvrable, so it is better suited to the sporty style of riding. Larger size – it will be more stable, so it should be preferred by people looking for a bike for a more stable ride.

Using the above advice, you will certainly be able to determine which bicycle frame will be the most suitable for you. We also encourage you to use the help of experienced dealers in the Kross bike showrooms.
