Job Offer by Brompton - Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Brompton (United Kingdom) - Our mission is to transform the way people live in cities. With over 16 million possible combinations of gears, colours, handlebars and accessories, we make more than just a bicycle, and we are more than just a bicycle company.

We continue to make the Brompton in West London, where we started in 1975, but our product has travelled far - we now export 80% of our bicycles to 45 countries. In the past 2 years we have invested in a new purpose-built production facility, transformed our digital architecture, opened new flagship stores and had our biggest product launch in company history and we’re not stopping there.

To change urban living, we need passionate, innovative and talented people that want to challenge the status quo and make an impact.

With the launch of the Brompton Electric e-bike in Summer 2018 Brompton has entered the fastest growing and most promising category in the bicycle market. The lack of safe bicycle storage options in cities represents an enormous opportunity for the Brompton Electric. As e-bikes are expected to become the major contributor to the company’s growth over the coming years we are recruiting an additional role in the commercial team to attain our ambitious goals.

The role:

The Brompton is the iconic product of its type, a unique bike used and loved in over forty countries around the world. Sales have grown rapidly over the last ten years, making us the largest bicycle manufacturer in the UK, with our products still designed and made by hand right here in London. Despite this we feel like we’re just getting started and there is huge potential to make the bike lighter, more capable and more fun to use.

As a design team we are passionate about making the best bike we can and approach this in an unusual way; we design all our own components, so they are exactly what we want and need them to be. Brakes, gears, tyres, luggage, frame parts and almost everything else. Brompton is created by us from nose-to-tail. Each project is therefore different; in some you’ll be designing a part for minimum weight and high stiffness, other projects will emphasise ergonomics, or making Brompton intuitive to use.

The Person:

We are on the hunt for an individual who can create a positive and innovative atmosphere which encourages people to commit themselves to the task in hand and where necessary, go beyond the call of duty in order to achieve their key objectives. The successful candidate will be able to generally motivate people to give their best results, praising them when things go well and appraising them of improvements which can and should be made. Also, mentor, counsel, coach and generally support those who are not confident in their area of competence, building morale and personal esteem and generally encouraging others to give their best performance.

The individual in this role will be expected to meet people with ease and motivate them to seek opportunities and achieve high standards and develop and comply with the systems, procedures, rules, objectives and timescales set by the organisation and take a disciplined approach when undertaking tasks.

Furthermore, the successful candidate is to provide the best possible solution to problem solving or decision making by conscientiously testing things, examining facts, trying different alternatives and thinking things through. Also, the individual will have to assert authority when necessary and always strive to achieve timescales and deadlines in order to overcome problems.

Flexibility is of key fundamental importance to the role so, the desired candidate will be proactive and energetic in the work situation, seeking to get things done and at the same time deal with a variety of tasks.

Overall, the candidate should have the drive to achieve results in a friendly manner but at the same time maintain quality and standards. The individual should have the ability to absorb and impart factual information to others and work within standard operating procedures. Ideally the person fulfilling the role will have specialist/technical skills and will work within an area of knowledge and expertise. Communication, the need to enjoy challenging situations and a systematic and perfectionist approach to problems are integral to the function. The ideal person for this position will be positive, participative, self-confident, friendly, self-starting, competitive, inquisitive, imaginative, factual, consistent and somewhat conventional and self-disciplined. Activity, mobility, flexibility, variety and pace are also likely to be important aspects within the function. The incumbent may prove to be a cautious decision maker due to the need for perfection and getting things right.
