The New Obed GVR - Pure Speed, Everywhere

Obed Bikes (United States) - Press Release: Fast is Fun: The Obed GVR.

The beauty of gravel is not with how it’s defined, but rather— how it’s not.

Gravel is open-source. Decentralized. That means how you define fun can go in any direction. The spirit of fun in gravel has arced toward adventure, but we also recognize a nod toward fun at high speed. On courses built with variety, but also a start line, a finish line and a podium.

Because for many, fast is fun. So we designed for both.

High-speed thrills or low-fi adventures:

Obed’s newest gravel machine is poised to play—regardless what your definition of play looks like. With a race pedigree and a soul for exploration, the GVR is designed for the speed of race day, with geometry for precision handling on the most technical sections, as well as tunnel-tested aerodynamic design and clean cable integration for unabashed speed during fast-paced action on pave and open fire road sections. Quietly prototype-tested in 2021, we put the GVR through its race paces, and it came out with flying colors. From the speed of Unbound, the loamy (and sometimes wet) conditions found at BWR Asheville and the sheer volume of a big day—and night— at Unbound XL, the GVR was dicing at the front, and ready for more.

But the GVR isn’t just a racehorse: it’s definitely down to party. With a soul for the weekend fire road roll with friends, the GVR sports tons of tire clearance and storage capacity, all packed into a lightweight chassis. With the GVR, hit the trail, finish at the river, and regale the day.

High-speed thrills, or low-fi adventures? Whatever your flavor, find your fun, with the GVR.

GVR Features: Pure Speed —Everywhere:

Aerodynamics:

Aero advantage plays a key role with the GVR, with several features found in modern road racing bikes, including aero cross sections, a multi-mount downtube with three water bottle bosses, engineered to shroud the water bottle, optional internal cable routing and a modular seatstay accessory mount. Tested in the wind tunnel, it helps you cheat the wind when you need it, reducing effort during epic rides—on road or off.

Invisible Internal Cable Routing:

To create one of the fastest and cleanest looking bikes in gravel, the GVR features fully internally routed cabling. All cables are fully contained within the cockpit, frame and fork, making for an exceptionally clean look, while keeping them hidden from the wind. For those that prefer to build their own cockpit for their own fitment, external bar and stem cable routing is available upon request.

Epic Day-Long Compliance:

In the GVR we’ve designed an intersecting seattube/toptube interface, isolating the seatstays from the seattube, in so helping the frame disperse and absorb vertical shock into the seatpost and ultimately to you the rider.

Deftly Agile:

When quickly switching rutted lines, railing a gravel corner at speed, sewing a path through a technical rocky section, or punching the gas on a steep uphill pitch, the GVR is remarkably agile and responsive, with minimal rider input.

Add-Ons:

Prefer to simply explore? With the GVR, we give you the option to purchase a removeable seatstay bridge hardware kit, allowing you to install fenders and/or a rack. With optional toptube bosses for frame-mounted nutrition storage and rear rack eyelets already engineered into the rear dropouts, you can load up your GVR for a fully-contained bikepacking weekend in the wilderness.

Your GVR, Your Way:

No other bike company gives you as many build choices as Obed. Choose not only your build specification and option of a 1x or 2x drivetrain but also choose wheels, wheel size (700c or 650B), tires, and a whole new range of color-blocked frame, fork and logo color options as well as handlebar, tire and saddle choices, and more. The choice is always yours.

GVR Aerodynamics:

Speed can be anything. It may be going flat out trying to stick with the lead pack on flat, fast fire roads— or a lung-burning scramble up a tight switchback that drops the chasers. So, we designed for both— and anything that is thrown at you in between.

With so many gravel races splitting time on the pavement, we didn’t want to concede a thing on the road, either. The GVR was designed with some aero advantages in mind, and proven in the wind tunnel. When long paved sections or groomed fire road stretches for miles, the aero advantage of the GVR tips in your favor.

A slightly tear dropped downtube with a blunted trailing edge that helps shield the downtube water bottle from the wind, narrow-aero seatstays, a bowed fork profile for clean airflow between fork blade and wheel, and fully hidden shift and brake cables allow the GVR to move with speed across the most windswept courses.

Epic Day-Long Compliance:

There’s no question, comfort can be one of the keys to your success. Whether it’s the critical late miles of an epic race, or just hammering with friends, there’s no joy in being beaten into a fatigued state by your bike.

With the GVR we’ve designed an intersecting seattube/toptube interface, isolating the seatstays from the seattube, in so helping the frame disperse and absorb vertical shock into the seatpost and ultimately to you the rider. Paired with a targeted carbon layup that allows for highly targeted vertical compliances.

Comfort through the front of the bike is addressed as well, via laterally-bowed fork blades engineered to help disperse vertical shock. The result is a ride that saves your hands, forearms and shoulders from the high-frequency vibrations that fatigue you on a long day in the saddle, ensuring you greater control.

The GVR’s dropped chainstay design is capable of fitting tires up to 700c x 48mm wide (or 650b up to 53mm). When the conditions or the course get rough, there’s enough float in the tires to keep you driving forward with reduced fatigue, and enough clearance to shed mud and stay at speed in the muddiest conditions.

Add stem length and bar width adjustability via our configurator, and you sacrifice nothing for the perfect fit that will comfortably sustain you hour after hour in the saddle.

Deftly Agile Handling:

In response to the limitless and ever-changing demands of gravel riding, we’ve tightened up handling with the GVR. Wherever pointed, it goes. A bit steeper head tube angle, a reduced fork trail and a lower bottom bracket paired with short chainstays. While the changes are small independent of one another, the combination of adjustments allow the GVR to float under you with razor-sharp precision and confidence.

When quickly switching rutted lines, railing a gravel corner with speed, sewing a path through a technical rocky section, or punching the gas on a steep uphill pitch, the GVR is remarkably agile and responsive, with minimal rider input.
